Attempts to connect to a Domino server over HTTP result in a status 400 error "Bad request" for some users who are authenticating to Domino through SPNEGO. When a web user connects to Domino, the browser sends an HTTP header with the SPNEGO login information in a Kerberos token. Domino reads the information and uses it to authenticate the user with Active Directory, and then it sets an LTPA token for the user, providing authentication with Domino. However, if the HTTP header is longer that 16KB, this will fail, resulting in a status 400 error. This is because Domino has a default HTTP header size limit of 16KB (16,384 bytes)... « IBM Lotus Support »

A phishing attacker sends an email with a link purporting to be to your website. It begins with your domain name, but employs the &redirectto argument to actually steer the user to their site if they click the link. This feature is used legitimately to create authentication pages that on logout, redirect the user to another page onsite that doesn't require authentication. But for some high-security sites, the functionality may be problematic.
We are not giving a specific example here on the theory that one should avoid giving instructions on how to attack server security... « IBM Lotus Support » |

A new version of the "LotusScript Gold Collection" toolkit is available on openntf.org. It includes the much requested NotesGroupManager library which used to be in the Lotus Sandbox, and a way to call Notes C API functions without having to check which OS you're using before each call. The latter might not work on all servers, but the problem has been reported to the LotusScript team in development. It works great on all clients (and you could easily make a server version, it's just not as efficient as you must load the classes for all supported OS instead of using dynamic loading)... « Andre Guirard » |

When automatically generating an adminp request that applies to a specific database, there's an item in the request that you may find hard to create. If you create adminp requests manually and then examine the items in them, you can see for instance that you might have the item ProxyReplicaID with a date/time value. Doesn't look like you would expect a replica ID to look. How do you convert the value of (say) NotesDatabase.ReplicaID, a string, to the TIMEDATE value that gets stored in the note? All the bits are used, so there's a 100ths of a second value that you can't see, but it's in there. Likewise, the timezone is stored in there and has to be preserved... « Andre Guirard » |

I asked my team to compile a list of the xSPs who provide Domino hosting services globally. Because of the highly distributed nature of IBM's channel relationships, this turned out to be harder to do than I had hoped. Never mind the complexity, though, we have technology and humans who can solve the challenge. We put up a wiki page on the Notes/Domino wiki to compile a list of all the Domino hosting providers. At V1, it only has US, Japan, Sweden, and Canadian entries (and clearly not all of the hosting providers in each of those countries). This is the first time I've actually edited one of our wikis and it took me like ten seconds, so it should be easy to build this into a robust list in a matter of hours. Can you help all of us by filling in others? Thanks! « Ed Brill » |

I've been needing to use LS2J recently so that I could code DNS lookups and web page requests as part of a testing system I'm working on for LotusLive. The documentation is a little vague on how you work with methods in a Java class from LotusScript, so since I had to experiment to find out how it worked, I figured it would be nice to record the information here. In most cases, you're writing the Java classes you're calling via LS2J, so you get to decide whether there are static members. But maybe you got the class from elsewhere and you don't want to have to modify it, or maybe you're just using a built-in class that you don't get to change. So it may occasionally be helpful to know how to use the static members. So here goes... « Andre Guirard » |

This technique isn't applicable in all situations, but it's a way to make a date or time-based view whose index is only rebuilt when needed, and doesn't require that the date be hardcoded into a design element. The example is intended for use in the Notes mail file, where there's only one user who we're mainly concerned about. It could be used in a shared app context, but in that case it should be set up to use the server's time settings, not the client's as in this example, since different users would be plugging in different formulas and causing constant rebuilds based on their client's settings as opposed to someone else's... « Andre Guirard » |

The term "RAD" (rapid application development) is often used to describe the capability to quickly build and deploy applications on Lotus Domino. From a question in one of the BOFs here, I've learned that the documentation of the LotusScript NotesNoteCollection method (NotesCollection in the Java API) contains a significant error. The help for the BuildCollection method says, "You must build the collection before it is usable." This is wrong. The documentation writers were only imagining one use for the collection - to search for notes. But there's another use for a NotesNoteCollection -- as a generic container for notes that you find by some other means, and add to the collection with the Add method. If this is how you're using the object, there's no need to call BuildCollection. This is a significant difference, because BuildCollection takes time to execute even if you haven't specified any search criteria. Speed things up by deleting the call. « Andre Guirard » |

From a service issue I've been working with one of our customers, I've discovered that there's a problem importing DXL containing large blocks of base64 data -- more than 4MB -- which would include any file attachments > 3MB, for instance. You would get this error message in the importer log: "Base64 byte stream contains invalid data or is too large to store in a single note item." (Of course, you can also get this error if your data really is invalid.)
This might happen in about 2% of cases involving large attachments or other large base64 blocks, and is essentially random (but consistent for a given input DXL).

In classic Lotus Domino Web development (without XPages) using non-7 bit-ASCII characters in field names can lead into problems, because Domino encodes such names into cryptic strings inside the HTML page. In some cases, i.e. for client side validation of fields using JavaScript in the browser, it is nearly impossible to get the original fields name off the encoded one. The easiest way would be to pre-calculate the encoded names in the Domino back-end and generate the needed JavaScript code before the HTML is send to the browser. I think one of the most exciting features of the Notes/Domino 8.5.2 release is the new managed replicas option, and I ended up talking about this quite a bit in my travels the last few days. Over the last few years, marketplace "best practice" has become for Lotus Notes users to operate their email off a local replica of their mailbox. This is an article about reviewing your Notes/Domino applications to see whether they will break when you upgrade to 8.5 or later. It's a very short article because I didn't find that much that needed to be done. Thanks to those who responded to my earlier thread asking for known issues; if I missed anything important, please comment here or on the wiki (or make the necessary changes yourself; that's why it's a wiki). This isn't about adding XPage functionality to your apps, by the way; just doing the minimum to make sure they're still functional in the new version. « Andre Guirard » |

Version 1.2 of the "LotusScript Gold Collection" is out. This includes a tool to read and manipulate inline images in a Notes document or form, and a nice (well-tested) class for maintaining a linked list of any type of object. The latter is the first of several standard data structure classes I intend to put in there, and I started with it because I needed it for the other thing.
I've been putting lots of cool stuff in this library, and I now welcome Francesco Marzolo as a new "cook" who wants to build on some of my earlier work to create a tool for synchronizing keyed records. The more the merrier, is what I say!
Incidentally, I saw someone had been looking to download a tool I posted in here for letting a user rearrange a list, which seems to have gone missing. I added this, too, to the LS Gold Collection. .. « Andre Guirard » |

I've been doing a lot of programming in LotusScript recently using linked lists, and refining my technique. This might be old news to some of you but I thought I'd mention it. And what I'm saying here in part applies specifically to LotusScript, but in part to any language that does reference counting.
LotusScript memory management is not perfect, and I've encountered situations where it gets hung up when deallocating memory, particularly when there are object references that go across script libraries (a class in Library A contains a reference to an object whose class is declared in Library B). The more you deallocate objects yourself with a Delete statement, the better your chances of not having a problem... « Andre Guirard » |

One little annoyance I've had is the need during testing to see and change the values of lines in my notes.ini file while the client is running. I either had to shut down the client, edit the notes.ini, and then restart Notes, or else write a special LotusScript control -- maybe a button in the body of a draft Memo -- to assign the value. (The ENVIRONMENT statement or @Environment in macro language can set an ini variable, but not a 'system' one). Add to this the difficulty of remembering the names of all the relevant ini variables, because if they don't already have a value, they're probably not in the file at all, so you can't search for the line to change it. To make this work more smoothly, I wrote a LotusScript agent in my bookmark.nsf file... « Andre Guirard » |

We have started implementing AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) in a number of applications at my company. Most of what we have done has been using agents to bring back HTML to change a Web page using the .innerHTML property. Have you ever dealt with someone having a local replica of a database and not replicating it on a regular basis? Hello DominoSecurity readers, in my last newsletter, I urged an upgrade to 6.5.5 and 7.0.1 for security reasons. Thanks to one of the readers on this list, I have become aware of a feature problem in the Notes client software 6.5.5. If this feature is important to you, you may want to keep your Notes client software at 6.5.4 and wait for a later release. The problem is that calendar delegation does not work properly after upgrading a Notes workstation to 6.5.5. The delegatee cannot create repeating events, reschedule meetings, or edit a meeting in the delegater's calendar. This is a serious, possibly show-stopper, issue for many Notes organizations, since calendar delegation is so widely used. Lotus has confirmed the existence of this problem and slated a fix for 6.5.6, which is scheduled for January 2007. In my opinion, this is too long to wait, since calendar delegation is common. I have expressed this opinion to Lotus via the Partner Forum. Note that this problem is related to the Notes 6.5.5 client software. The problem does not appear to be in the 6.5.5 Domino server or web browser access to a 6.5.5 server. Also, no one has reported the same issue with Notes 7.0.1... « Chuck Connell » |

But I discovered today that adding R7 to the mix changes things. I attempted to install R7 on my machine and never was able to change the default locations for the program and data directories. Two things got me excited this weekend. Both of them related in a sense. First was Ruby on Rails. Second was Prototype JavaScript Framework. Related because Rails ships with the Prototype library. More on Rails tomorrow. For now, let's talk about Prototype... Anyway, last week I had cause to use Ajax again and this time I wanted to make sure I was doing it the right/best way. Prototype.js seemed to be the way to go. If it's good enough for Rails it's good enough for me. At first I thought I'd use the library just for making Ajax calls. Microsoft SQL Server. It's the golden database child of small to mid-sized IT departments. Programming Lotus Notes to access fields and tables and views on SQL Server is pretty much a cake walk. Agent logging is a great feature that's been around in Notes ever since LotusScript has been around (starting in Notes R4). But it's something not everyone takes advantage of. With an editable readers/authors field, users can type in names (the field is editable, after all). There are things you can do to validate the names, but I felt (for this application) that forcing the pick from an address book would be the best option. The fields were access fields, so I had to make sure that the format was correct so the people would be granted access. @Picklist([Name]) would be an option, until I realized that users could type in a name inside the dialog box (there's a field called "Add name not in list" when you use a picklist). A well-designed Web site allows visitors to easily get around and find the information they want without becoming impatient or frustrated. Nothing discourages a visitor faster than encountering broken links... « Lotus » |

Have you ever had someone send you a database that had the ACL setting "Enforce a consistent Access Control List across all replicas" enabled? This setting is not truly a security setting, although it does affect security somewhat. The true purpose of the setting is for replication - two replicas will fail to replicate if their ACL's are not identical and they cannot be resolved (meaning, the person/server doing the replication does not have manager access to the other replica)... « Breaking Par » |

I answer a lot of questions on a few different forums, and a frequent refrain from those of us who answer questions is "Please search the forum. This question has been asked, and answered, many times.", or words to that effect.
So, as you may recall, back on November 4th, I suggested a Notes/Domino Wikipedia. Collaboration being what it is, it didn't take long for Bruce Elgort to chime in with an offer to host the Wiki on OpenNTF. We have added a few topics, but intentionally just a few, to seed the Wiki, and today I introduced it on the Notes 4 & 5 forum and the Notes 6 & 7 forum and on the Business Partner forum. Via your mail file's "Tools - Preferences" settings, Lotus Notes allows you to automatically append a signature file to mail messages you send. When you choose "HTML" you select the file from your computer. HTML signature files are "fancier" as they allow you to use different fonts, colours, images, web sites links, etc. The problem is, most users don't know how to code an HTML file. Securing the Domino server in these environments is very important to ensure both the integrity of the data and the availability of the Web site, especially on the Internet. In this article, we discuss how you can use Domino security features to enforce security in your Web environment. We begin with a quick overview of the Domino security model. Then we look at securing a Web server through Web authentication, server security, and data security. This article assumes that you are an experienced Domino system administrator... « Matthew Milza/Scott Rogers » |

- Build on fifteen years of Lotus Notes in-market leadership by protecting and leveraging existing customer investments in Lotus Notes and Domino « Ed Brill » |

More and more we at Breaking Par are using style sheets in the Notes client. Although the CSS implementation in the Notes client isn't the greatest (at least through Notes 6.5) it is pretty good and you have lots of options. But the web certainly has more options. A long time ago we posted a tip for getting a random file name that doesn't exist in a given directory. That has worked well for us for years, but we decided to update it. There were a couple of things we didn't like about the old function. The first was that you were restricted to one file name. This is fine for 99% of the times you want to use it, but if you needed a couple different file extensions, then it meant a couple of calls to the function. This new version allows you to get a file name that doesn't exist for 1 or more file extensions. The second thing we didn't like is that you had to remember to not include the "." in your extension, otherwise when the function returned you would have consecutive periods in the file name. Again, not a serious limitation, but the new function doesn't care if you include the period in the file extension or not... « Breaking Par » |

Recently, Lotus posted five potential security alerts on their web site (www.lotus.com/security). The list is below, along with my comments about each.
Long String of UNICODE 430 Characters Reported to Cause Denial of Service on Domino Web Server -- This vulnerability was reported by iDEFENSE. Lotus was not able to reproduce it with any version of Domino and therefore did not fix it. Please let me (Chuck) know directly if you believe this vulnerability is real and/or if you are able to exploit it.
CERT VU#699798 - Lotus Domino allows HTTP header injection -- This exploit, while verified by Lotus, requires an attacker to create and install a maliciously coded application on a Domino server. It is low risk, in my opinion.
Potential Denial of Service Vulnerability During Notes Authentication -- This vulnerability was verified by Lotus, and relates to the way user authentication data is passed between Domino and a Notes client. It is possible to use this exploit to crash the server. Lotus and Symantec (who found the issue) have released no details about the vulnerability, so I cannot determine how serious the threat is. Because it involves the NRPC protocol between Notes and Domino, I suspect it is hard to exploit.
Buffer Overruns in Certain Date Fields Cause Domino Server Crash -- This is probably the most serious vulnerability of the set. An attacker can cause a server crash by submitting bad data to an editable date field in a Domino web application.
Potential Denial of Service Vulnerability in Notes Client -- This exploit requires an attacker to edit a user's NOTES.INI file on a workstation. I believe it is a very low risk exploit, but Lotus has fixed the problem.
Releases 6.0.5 and 6.5.4 address all of these issues. I encourage readers to perform this upgrade. « Chuck Connell » |

Back when I had a desktop machine, I would make use of the "*" key on the numeric keypad to fully expand one and only one category in a categorized view. If there were multiple levels of categorization, it would expand all the levels, but only for the selected document. When I moved to using a laptop almost exclusively, I don't normally have a numeric keypad now. (I have to turn num lock on, then press the "P" key, then turn num lock off). The normal "*" key is now a SHIFT+8, which means you're holding down the SHIFT key, which means Notes will fully expand all the categories instead of just the one you're on. For a recent intranet project, we were working on a survey application. The choices for each question were Yes, No, and N/A. On the back-end we needed to total up all the "Yes" answers and wanted to ignore the "No" and "N/A" answers. So we made this easy by setting an alias for "Yes" to "1", and the alias for "No" and "N/A" was both "0". We could just sum up all the field values and we'd have our number of "Yes" answers. This was working fine until the customer wanted to add an additional prompt if the user clicked "N/A" making sure that's what they wanted to do. Now "No" and "N/A" need to behave slightly different but still neither contributes to the total on the back end. We couldn't change the alias, so how do we know, at the time of clicking, if "No" or "N/A" was chosen, without looking at the alias? Read on to find the answer... « Breaking Par » |

If you've been doing Notes development for any length of time, you've run across this message. The problem is that it pops up in a dialog box, and that's the *ONLY* thing in the dialog box. Images that are uploaded and attached to blog entries via the web based editor will now appear correctly.
New Feature : Hide Trackback box

Buttons have been added to the blocks view to allow you to move the blocks up and down without having to go into each block form.
New Feature : Image Preview
The emoticons form and the Images form have been updated so that they will show a preview of the image once the document has been saved.

Build a Domino pop-up calendar widget using formula language
Although available when programming for the Lotus Notes client, Domino does not provide any built-in widget or applet that lets Web client users easily select a date from a calendar to fill in date-based fields. The Domino administration process (AdminP) is a server-side mechanism for automating administrative tasks in the background on a specified schedule. AdminP also has another very powerful but not as well known feature that allows administrators to create their own administration processes and requests. This open interface is how third parties can create their own administration process request handlers and simply "plug" them in to perform administrative functions not supported by AdminP (for example, changing ACLs on all mail files on every server). Today, I'm proud to announce that we market a Software Development Kit for Domino developers. The SDK allows you to mimic the behavior of classic Notes views in a web (browser) interface. It supports common navigation like the quick-search function and other keyboard input like PgUp and PgDn. It also supports actions like create menu-buttons in the view or deleting documents from the view. It even supports a focus bar, enabling users to both use the keyboard or the mouse for navigation and opening / editing documents with the <Enter> key. When you leave a view, it remembers where you were and will position you in the exact same position on your next visit. And, of course, it allows developers to design the cosmetics of Notes views. Generally speaking: it recreates the look and feel of "common" or conventional Notes views for the Lotus Notes client on the web... « Klaas van der Galien » |

Have you ever wanted to switch the contents of two rich text fields in the Notes client? Recently a developer had a requirement to do this. Because the application is confidential, I can't tell you the exact reason why, but it was needed. Knowing how rich text fields are notorious for only wanting to change in the back end instead of the front end, this posed a little problem. But we eventually solved it, and this tip shows the solution... « Breaking Par » |

Andreas Klein has reported a vulnerability in IBM Lotus Domino Web Access (formerly iNotes), which can be exploited by malicious people to cause a DoS (Denial of Service). The vulnerability is caused due to an unspecified error when processing mails and can be exploited by sending a mail containing an overly large, specially crafted JPG image attachment (about 12 MB) to a vulnerable system. Successful exploitation reportedly crashes the whole Domino server, when the mail is opened. The vulnerability has been reported on a system running Domino 6.5.1. Other versions may also be affected... « Thomas Duff » |

In Notes 4.x it was possible to call the methods of a class using extended syntax without setting the object to a variable. In Notes 5.x and 6.x, calling methods using extended syntax can result in an error. The below code example demonstrates this using the NotesDocumentCollection class. The below agent could be set to run on "All documents in database" to demonstrate. When the agent is run it will result in the error "Document is not from this collection" when the line above the "Loop" statement is executed... « Thomas Duff » |

This release fixes the bug when servers have spaces in their names. The list of servers available wasn't displayed correctly.
For those of you who already have a previous release installed, download the template, sign it with a user that has the right to execute agent on your server and replace the design of your DB with this template.
If the manual reports are working and the scheduled ones are not, open the DB in the designer, disable the "MainAnalyser" agent and re-enabled it. You will be asked on which server is the server you want to run the scheduled agent... « OpenNTF » |

« jNotes » |

This project provides a means to validate DoD X.509 certificates against the current DoD Certificate Revocation List (CRL) on a Lotus Domino server. There is no support for external CRL checking built in to the Lotus Domino product.
The CRL checker consists of two main parts: a database that holds certificate data and an agent to download updated CRLs and a servlet (processCRL.class) that handles validation.
There are some test certs included. These certs were issued from openvalidation.org which is a great place to go to learn all you need to know about certificates and CRLs and OCSP and so on.
The updateCRL.class is a standalone Java class to download CRLs without using Domino. It's essentially the same code as the Java agent located in the CRL.ntf template. « OpenNTF » |

Sometimes you want a user to enter a field in a specific format, like date or time fields. A lot of error handling (and patience from the user) is needed to check if the user has entered a value in the right format. By creating a button with a selection input makes it a lot easier. To prevent a user from still entering or changing a value into a wrong format you can simply disable the onFocus event of this field by setting the focus to another field or button. This way the user is forced to use the button... « Maarten Docter » |
