The recent gathering of the Faithful at Lotusphere in Orlando was markedly different to previous events. On the Domino R5 Server users can create personal agents in Notes databases. In Notes 6.x the number of times that an agent can call itself using the @Command ToolsRunMacro or RunAgent is limited to 15 times. The agent stops without any error or warning, and the agent log does not reflect any error condition. This causes applications which worked under Notes 5.x to fail. In Notes 5.x such an agent would keep looping for 190+ iterations until the Notes Client crashed... « Thomas Duff » |

Quite often I hear complains from users about the well know "Addressbook-Dialog", which they use daily to select the addressees of their e-mails. The main problem is that there are too many entries, which are useless for the user, displayed. These are mainly server names, ACL only groups, deny access groups, mail-in databases. This is especially the case for small companies with only a few users, as the amount of these entries can easily be larger than the actuall user count. When last we left our superhero, he was pondering the question of why AgentContext in a Notes agent would be a global reference, even when it was created from two distinct Sessions (when I say distinct, I mean that they were instantiated separately and recycling one had no effect on the other).
I think some of my confusion about the Session object and the AgentContext object in the Domino Objects for Java was that I was thinking that AgentContext was contained by Session -- just like how in the backend LotusScript classes or the C++ API everything you use is essentially contained by a Session object... « Julian Robichaux » |

What's really interesting here are two distinct findings:
1. There is no question that two threads hitting different databases pretty hard at the same time, run more than twice as fast as both threads using the same session. In fact, there is a 125% difference -- wow.
2. Maybe even more interesting, is that while there was virtually no difference when doing this on one thread at a time -- in fact it was faster IN TOTAL to do it sequentially than on distinct threads... « Andrew Pollack » |

I have had some time to work with ND6.5.1 and overall I'm impressed with some subtle improvements. Every upgrade adds a little more polish, and there are always the unintended errors. BUG FIX. This version fixes a bug where an AgentContext object was being recycled in the constructor of OpenLogItem. This is very bad. Way back in November '02, I wrote in developerWorks about a phenomenon I had spotted where an email sent via the Internet by a Microsoft email user to a Lotus Notes user arrived "missing" an attachment which subsequently proved to be present in the MIME source of the message, but ignored by the Notes MUA. The original article may be found here. Well, it's still happening. A user complained to me last Friday afternoon that he had had an email from someone which should have contained an attachment and it had turned up in his in-box without said attachment... « Chris Linfoot » |

Included below is a sample agent that will copy all documents from one mail/archive database to another. It goes through each folder in the source database and copies the folder and all of the documents in it to the destination database. Whatever has not already been copied after all of the folders have been cycled through is then copied at the end of the script. Note: The code does not copy the following folders: Trash, Alarms, Rules and Group Calendar... « Manfred Dillmann » |

Well the majority of you probably know this little trick already. However, I performed this trick in front of someone who didn't so I thought I would share. With the new clients you can now drag and drop attachments onto your desktop or into a folder via the opened message. You can also drag and drop the files you want to attach to a message right into your new message.. « Tony Kelleran » |

How to change the icon of attached files in RT-fields in Notes documents, - on web? When you attach files like .doc/.pdf/.zip to a Notes document directly, and preview these documents on web, they don't look too good, unless you like those ugly big icons. How can we change them dynamically and easy? « Rune Carlsen »

Pictures from the 'Sphere
Last week, when we filed our very short report from Lotusphere, we promised you a lot more coverage and a lot more pictures from Lotusphere 2004. In this issue, Senior Technical Editor Mick Moignard provides a detailed analysis of the various announcements (and a behind the scenes perspective). Meanwhile, Editor-in-Chief David Gewirtz was busy with my digital SLR, and below are some more pictures from the show.
Post-Lotusphere 2004 report: gaining understanding and perspective
In this extremely important article, Senior Technical Editor Mick Moignard puts all of the Lotusphere 2004 IBM Lotus announcements into perspective. Where exactly do Workplace, WebSphere, and Java fit into the Notes/Domino future? What's in the new 6.5.1 release? What's up for the future of ND7 and on? It's all answered in a clear manner in Mick's report. This is a must read article. « DominoPower » |

kSpam v1.39b has been released:
- Fixed bload crashing when it encounters an email with zero body length
- Two Notes templates (NMailGood.NTF and NMailSpam.ntf) have been added thanks to Francois Lafleur, you can use them for the Bayesian databases mailgood and mailspam or just use NMailSpam.ntf for the copied.nsf database.
- bload will now terminate quicker if it is loading word probabilities when a quit message is posted (i.e. on shutdown)
- Added KS_IID notes.ini variable, sets the instance ID for an organisations servers, stops an email getting scanned more than once as it passes through different installations of kSpam. « OpenNTF » |

I was doing some design work today, mostly adding navigation to $$ViewTemplate forms, and working on HTML formatting in views. I copied some code we had used in a DDN app to create alphabet based navigation on the form. It's just a bunch of hotspots, one for each letter of the alphabet, so when you click on one, you jump down to the entries that start with that letter in the view. While adapting it for my new app, I realized that we had hard-coded a URL in a StartKey field, which each of the hotspots uses to determine where to go, so I took the opportunity to clean it up a little. Here are the details... « Melissa Gena » |
