Have you ever had someone send you a database that had the ACL setting "Enforce a consistent Access Control List across all replicas" enabled? This setting is not truly a security setting, although it does affect security somewhat. The true purpose of the setting is for replication - two replicas will fail to replicate if their ACL's are not identical and they cannot be resolved (meaning, the person/server doing the replication does not have manager access to the other replica)... « Breaking Par » |

Remember the article I wrote called Creating In-line Response Documents? It describes how to fake forms like the one you would use to add a comment to this blog.
These fake forms work well, until you try and add a file upload control (FUC) to them. This is a problem I've had to address recently. Here's how... « Jake Howlett » |

IE users might notice the top blue banner on the site is now the height I intended it to be and the same height as in Firefox. Wondering why? Read on. Remember last Tuesday I turned off JavaScript for this site. Well, on Wednesday I went a step further and turned off Quirks Mode! « Jake Howlett » |

I answer a lot of questions on a few different forums, and a frequent refrain from those of us who answer questions is "Please search the forum. This question has been asked, and answered, many times.", or words to that effect.
So, as you may recall, back on November 4th, I suggested a Notes/Domino Wikipedia. Collaboration being what it is, it didn't take long for Bruce Elgort to chime in with an offer to host the Wiki on OpenNTF. We have added a few topics, but intentionally just a few, to seed the Wiki, and today I introduced it on the Notes 4 & 5 forum and the Notes 6 & 7 forum and on the Business Partner forum. It is now called the Notes/Domino WikiFAQ! Come on over and check it out... « Ben Langhinrichs »

We were developing a new web site for a customer when we had an odd request - they wanted no Notes access whatsoever to the application. They wanted to force their users to access the application through a web browser. Normally, at least some kind of administrative access would happen through Notes, but that wasn't even wanted in this case. How did we satisfy this requirement? « Breaking Par » |

A comment posted yesterday inspired me to come up with a brilliantly simple solution to the problem of multiple buttons on a form which doesn't allow JavaScript. Jeff Crossett reminded of me of an important fact: that a button with a name is submitted to the server as a name/value pair, just like a normal field is... « Jake Howlett » |

Have you ever wanted to be able to sort your Domino views in the browser in just the same way that you can from the Notes Client? This article shows one way to achieve column sorting on the Web using some simple JavaScript routines. I use a similar method to allow the sorting of search results in my C-Search products... « Colin Neale » |

Lotus "Education on Demand" has published several new PDFs about mostly administration concerns: telnetting into SMTP and troubleshooting DNS. There is also some information from Lotus support about which Java version corresponds to which Lotus product (though, there is no mention of Firefox/Mozilla for Domino 7, an important omission). And, to wrap it all up, a summary on silent client installations and DWA troubleshooting... « Jack Dausman » |

A recent request from a client of mine was to mimic a feature of a bug-tracking system they use. The feature was a part of a non-Domino website, but they wanted it adding to their Domino system. It wasn't something I'd been asked to do before then and isn't something I've seen described elsewhere. Hence, I will describe the problem and solution now... « Jake Howlett » |

For those of you that have not learned the new @-function @IfError introduced in Notes 6, I have good news - you don't have to worry about it. The function has been made obsolete in Notes 7. The function still works in Notes 7, but according to the Notes Designer Help, it is now obsolete. Apparently, the function didn't quite work as designed and it sounds like it would be a real pain to fix. What does this mean to developers currently using the function... « Breaking Par » |

Did you know that some replica ID's are related to the replica ID of the NAB on your Domino server? This is so that when a Domino server starts up and it is missing some of these databases it can recreate them with a replica id that it knows will be the same as the replica id on other servers. Here's a full list of the ones that I know about, updated for the Notes Domino 7 release... « Declan Lynch » |

As one of several very active responders on the Gold Forums (Stan Rogers is probably the most active) for a number of years, it seems that we are missing an opportunity. If you've done any work with DXL, you have no doubt seen the "universal time" that is generated for date/time values.
