I was recently contacted by Katherine Emling (used to be Katherine Spanbauer, the security czarina at IBM/Lotus) about possibly writing a little file to help users more easily apply the recommended workaround in Technote 1229918, which deals with a security issue with the Lotus Notes File Viewers... « Rocky Oliver » |

Since today is Show-N-Tell Thursday, and I have not blogged yet this week (sorry, working on stuff!) I figured I'd share a tool I wrote a while back with everyone. It is called File Manager For Lotus Notes, and I've posted it on OpenNTF. I originally designed this tool many years ago when I was an administrator and wanted to keep track of all the mail files across our many server. However, I find this tool can be handy for users as well. For example you can keep track of the Notes databases and templates on your own computer, running a report once a week/month allowing you to keep track of how various databases sizes are changing... « Alan Lepofsky » |

One thing I find really annoying in Notes is that when new interface options are added, particularly in rich text, they are often hidden. For example, if you create a collapsed section, you have various options about how it will display, and these have been enhanced through various Notes releases... « Ben Langhinrichs » |

We first mentioned OpenNTF.org (at http://www.openNTF.org) back in 2002, in an article about the changing world of Domino development. After happily talking to many very nice, but slightly wacky OpenNTF T-shirt wearing developers at Lotusphere, I realized we'd never done an article specifically about this very useful resource... « David Gewirtz » |

As an Admin/sometime developer, I tend to run multiple Notes clients on one system. Having R4, R5, and R6 on one machine never really posed much of a problem (and before you ask, no, I am NOT running R4 and/or R5 on my system). But I discovered today that adding R7 to the mix changes things. I attempted to install R7 on my machine and never was able to change the default locations for the program and data directories. Tried a couple of times. Nothing. So, in a moment of clarity, I looked at the Readme file (yeah, who would have guessed that I would do that). From the Notes R7 Readme file... « Gregg Eldred » |

Two things got me excited this weekend. Both of them related in a sense. First was Ruby on Rails. Second was Prototype JavaScript Framework. Related because Rails ships with the Prototype library. More on Rails tomorrow. For now, let's talk about Prototype... Anyway, last week I had cause to use Ajax again and this time I wanted to make sure I was doing it the right/best way. Prototype.js seemed to be the way to go. If it's good enough for Rails it's good enough for me. At first I thought I'd use the library just for making Ajax calls. However, I soon found myself using other parts of it to make the rest of my coding a lot simpler and slicker. I then went on to update the Ajax @DBLookup database to use Prototype.js... « Jake Howlett » |

I changed the code for my project "Wendy" once again. In the former version of nstart.exe, the file had to be copied to the Notes executable directory. This is no longer necessary now; you can copy nstart.exe to i.e the "root" directory of your USB key, regardless of where your Notes Client is installed. nstart.exe locates the notes.ini and notes.exe, makes the necessary changes and starts the client... « Ulrich Krause » |

Not long back I was working on a "feedback" form for a website. The clients wanted a basic rich text editor for the Message/Body field. Simple enough. The message field is a a standard Notes Rich Text field and saved as Passthru HTML in the backend document. Another requirement of the system was that it worked in browsers with no JavaScript support. This is where I hit a snag... « Jake Howlett » |

Awhile back I posted about my littleSignature File Wizard that I had created. Basically it allows you to mail a self-contained feature to a Notes mail user, and they can go through some steps and create a nice little signature block. After Lotusphere I dug that code up and updated it with the "Yellow is the New Black" theme and one of the logos floating around... « Rocky Oliver »

For a recent project, there was a need to show (on the web) documents created "today". There are a number of ways to do this, including using time sensitive formulas (either @Today or @Now) in a view. This is a new way of doing it that doesn't involve time sensitive formulas in views or scheduled agents... « Breaking Par » |

Microsoft SQL Server. It's the golden database child of small to mid-sized IT departments. Without trying to spark any kind of religious debate over the merits of SQL Server versus MySQL versus Oracle versus whatever, let's just agree that SQL Server is pretty pervasive. And therefore, it's a technology that we'll want to "talk to" on occasion.
Programming Lotus Notes to access fields and tables and views on SQL Server is pretty much a cake walk. You can use LS:DO or DECS or ADO COM objects to grab them just like you would any other relational database, and use regular SQL calls to retrieve and manipulate data. No big magic there.... Here are some techniques you might find handy... « Julian Robichaux »

Lately, I have made several agents that read web pages and analyze the contents, and I know that I'm not the only one doing this. However, most people seem to use either Java or the MS COM object WinHttp.WinHttpRequest.5.1. I don't. I haven't yet learned how to use Java, and I found limitations in using the MS COM object. Instead, I use the built-in functionality of the Notes/Domino Web Navigator with LotusScript. This is how I use this functionality, and hopefully, it can help someone else out there... « Peter von Stöckel »

When dealing with lists (arrays) in formula language, every once in a while you want to remove an entry from the list. There are slick ways of doing this with @Replace or other ways, but those have their drawbacks. For example, with @Replace, if there are duplicate entries in the list both will be removed (that may or may not be desired). This code, although a little longer than those "slick" ways, is pretty easy to follow and removes one and only one element from a list in formula language... « Breaking Par » |

Most Web applications use a request/response model that gets an entire HTML page from the server. The result is a back-and-forth that usually involves clicking a button, waiting for the server, clicking another button, and then waiting some more. With Ajax and the XMLHttpRequest object, you can use a request/response model that never leaves users waiting for a server to respond. In this article, Brett McLaughlin shows you how to create XMLHttpRequest instances in a cross-browser way, construct and send requests, and respond to the server... « Brett McLaughlin » |
